The project

The project involves the replacement of some sections of the water network. The intervention is part of CAP Group planning for the periodic maintenance of the aqueduct networks and the preventive replacement of the sections that are particularly dated, to avoid future breakage with consequent difficulties in service.

In detail

Since the existing network is made of fibre cement, once the new steel network was built, it was decided to remove and dispose of the old one in accordance with current regulations, thus guaranteeing the future safety of operators and people residing in the area. While underground and intact, fibre cement pipes are not dangerous to public health, but they require special maintenance which is carried out in absolute safety. For this reason, the removal of the pipelines was entrusted to a specialised company registered in the National Register of Environmental Managers under category 10, “Reclamation of goods containing asbestos”.

The average excavation depth is -1.40 metres from the surface. At the end of the works, a temporary restoration of the road surface is carried out. The final restoration and horizontal signage are completed after the necessary settling time of the ground.

The work plan is submitted to the ATS and the Municipality 30 days before the start of works in order to obtain approval.
The activities are carried out by highly specialised companies and technicians, registered in the National Register of Environmental Managers and authorised for the reclamation of asbestos and the transport of hazardous waste. Works management and safety coordination are entrusted to CAP Group technicians.

Our first objective is the safety of those who work at the worksite and transit or reside nearby. The first measures for establishing safety were: identification and mapping of the underground networks (tracking, depth, materials) followed by specific surveys on the territory (geological, geophysical and sampling).

Before working on the concrete - asbestos network, the new steel network is built. The first part of the work plan consists of the installation and commissioning of the new network, which is first tested and activated. Then the fibre cement network section is decommissioned, while the water that reaches the citizens already passes through the newly laid network. This working technique makes it possible to avoid interrupting the water supply during the works for replacing the water network.

Subsequently, the old fibre cement network is removed. This phase of the works involves various safety measures to guarantee the safety of those working at the worksite and any citizens who transit or reside nearby.
