Gruppo CAP: “An industrial plan we believe in, open to proposals from municipalities to strengthen the project”

First report since the start of the OFMSW (Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste) treatment plant, now fully operational. In total, approximately 11,000 tonnes of OFMSW have been treated up to February 2024, and more than 400,000 cubic metres of biomethane have been injected into the local Unareti network. The aim is to convert more than 30,000 tonnes of waste per year into bioenergy, producing up to 2.7 million cubic metres of biomethane, enough to meet the energy needs of 1,700 households.

The industrial plan is progressing rapidly, and the next step in the schedule of works to be started in 2019, which will lead to the creation of the first Italian centre of industrial symbiosis between a treatment plant and a waste incineration plant, is the sludge line. For this reason, Gruppo CAP intends to strengthen the BioPiattaforma project in order to continue generating value for the territory, even after the decision of the Municipality of Cologno Monzese to leave the ZeroC shareholding structure, a decision that is still informal for the time being.

This decision was taken unilaterally by the Municipality of Cologno Monzese, without taking into account the consequences for the other members and for the joint projects that were being carried out.

The BioPiattaforma project will therefore continue, as provided for in the industrial plan, and will continue to guarantee compensation to the municipalities for the share of OFMSW (Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste) treated in the plant. BioPiattaforma includes two waste treatment lines: one for sewage sludge, which will be fully operational in 2026 and will produce heat, electricity and fertilisers from sludge from water treatment, and one for OFMSW, which is already operational and will transform organic waste into clean and renewable energy.

With regard to ongoing developments, Gruppo CAP has also consulted the RAB (Residential Advisory Board), which was created in 2019 at the start of the BioPiattaforma project. The RAB is the result of a participatory process involving all the stakeholders of the municipalities involved and was created to bring together representatives of ZeroC, Gruppo CAP, the member municipalities and local associations to monitor and follow the activities of the BioPiattaforma step by step.
